Hey I just noticed, there's a couple of bad errors in the combats, you had land based aircraft involved in 2 combats that were not added in! Let me fix Combat A Japan should have been 38 (not 30) 1/4 damage = 9.5, rounded to 10 Therefore 13 AF is damaged Japan 21st air unit is also damaged Combat G Japan should attack at 19 (not 9) Therefore Japan does 9.5 damage, rounded to 10 AUS air unit is flipped The first loss must go the Japan 25th aircraft for 10 losses. 16 more losses required, so that must elim the Japan air unit. Move looks good, just some very minor things. You can’t have the LRB move into the battle hex in Battle A. Planes already in battle hexes can participate but if it’s a reaction plane it needs to be outside of it. Just as well though as where it originally was is in range all the same. Same in Battle G with the Aus air, but again at original airfield it is in range for full strength attack so just stays where it was and contributes all the same. Exact same situation with Battle T and the 5th AF. I don’t know what you mean in Battle A that US carrier was -2. It has 8 attack, combed with a 10 and a 4 for the planes = 22. 1/2 result with the four roll means 11 damage for you to apply, 8 damage for me. As you say no losses. In Battle T I believe you have 12 attack factors (4+8), not 10. But no effect on the result. You can go ahead and do PBM now. |

You are partially right. Because it is not a surprise, you are able to act, but only potentially. If you have a reaction card, and play it now, that will guarantee your ability to react as if you yourself had played a 3 Ops card (because that is what I played). But if you don’t have a card like that, or do but don’t want to use it now. Maybe you think you would prefer to save it, or you prefer to use it for OC rather than the event as a reaction. Just note that several of the reaction cards say at the bottom that you can draw another, which makes it less costly to use them as reaction cards. You can chose to roll for a reaction. What you do is look at the “intel” rating of the card I played. My card was a 7 intel value because I played it for the event (ie EC: 7 on the card). If I had played it just for OC then the intel rating would be a 5 (OC: 5 on the card), meaning it is harder to react to than the event. You roll one die, and compare your roll to the intel. A 7 intel means you need to roll a 7 or under to detect my attack and do a reaction, except that my attack was within your ZOI so you get a -2 benefit on your roll. Which would mean rolling a 9 becomes a 7, except that the other rule is that a 9 is always a failure. So in this case, you just need to roll anything but a 9. If you get unlucky you can’t react, and it will be a surprise, for which I will get a DRM bonus +3 in combat. |

Sorry for the delay, it was a busy weekend. I now realize why the guide said to do this opening, that whole pinning gall my troops! When you can do that, then all these little engagements make more sense. Battle A No damage either side. I have higher A/N strength at end of battle, so I win and you must do PBM. But even if you had the higher A/N at end of battle, because there were no ground units to flip control of the hex, you would be considered the “winner” of the A/N battle, but would have to PBM out anyhow. Battle B No damage, again you must PBM your carrier back to a friendly port to end your turn in Battle C Identical sitation as B Battle D Identical to B again Battle E In this case your 8 damage to apply could have gone to either one or another of my units, but seeing as how one of those units had a higher attack strength it is obvious for me to choose which one to apply the hit to so that’s what I did. * 4021 (Rabaul) : [APD Kamikaze] suffers a step loss. * 4021 (Rabaul): CA Northampton is eliminated Battle F, technically this is not a battle because I didn’t have any units on it. You just get to move your guys there. Also, I realized (due to sleepiness ATM) that I shouldn’t have been rolling two die at the same time given these were surprise attacks. It should have been just your attack rolled for first, then whatever surviving firepower of mine gets to hit back. But in the specific scenarios of our battles, it wouldn’t have made any difference. Small note regarding doing the battles in Vassal, you drop the marker for the big battle letter where the battle is happening, then the units that are joining, you right click and indicate “join battle”. Then you hit the letter of the battle they are joining and the little letter in the corner will change. Bty for your post battle movement. When you are done you can click the little broom icon to clean up the battles and wipe the markers. Then I don’t get to do PBM and there are no emergency naval moves for me, so it will then be back to me for next card play. |
